Having recently had trouble discovering a sound I could easily get lost in, I found myself fervently scrolling through my iTunes in search of a long-lost love already in my repertoire of mood music. That’s when I came across The xx. The album that had so deeply engrossed me (and many others) was once again able to capture my attention after an unintentional but extended listening hiatus. This of course got me thinking: why have The xx not put out anything new since? I’ve unquestionably enjoyed Jamie xx’s successful solo kick DJ’ing & re-mixing to the likes of Gil Scott-Heron and Florence + the Machine, but I was yearning for the seductive sound of The xx‘s self-titled debut album. Well, ask and you shall receive. Just yesterday, The xx released a new song, Angels, off their forthcoming album. I could not be more excited about it. Slow, sultry and heartbreaking, the fear of the sophomore slump that so often comes with an acclaimed debut seems, at the moment, irrelevant. Bringing back the enigmatic sound of their first album, I can’t wait to hear what else The xx have in store when their new album Coexist drops Sept. 10th. Until then, this song is on repeat.
